Mürren - Schilthorn Switzerland

Mürren – originally settled by people from the Lötschen valley in Valais, something still evident today in the architecture of the houses and in the local dialect – is the highest permanently inhabited village in the canton of Bern. It sits on a terrace at 1,650 meters (5,413 ft), high above the Lauterbrunnen valley. A double-cable aerial tramway runs up to the plateau from Lauterbrunnen, while another cableway leads from Stechelberg, past thundering waterfalls and steep rock faces, into the center of the car-free village of Mürren and then continues on to the Schilthorn at 2,970 meters (9,744 ft). In the late 1960s, the producers of the James Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” were immediately captivated by the futuristic revolving restaurant on the Schilthorn: the scenes featuring the fictional ‘Piz Gloria’ simply had to be filmed here. The movie was a great success, as were the Schilthorn cableway and the revolving restaurant. From the summit, a magnificent 360° panorama opens up over the world-famous Alpine trio of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, and extends as far as Mont Blanc and the Black Forest.
